What Is a Support Broker, and Why Does It Matter?

You Don’t Have to Do Self-Direction Alone

Self-Direction gives people with developmental disabilities the power to choose the services and supports that fit their lives — but with that freedom comes responsibility. Budgets. Staffing. Compliance. Planning.

It can be a lot to manage — and that’s where a Support Broker comes in.

As your Support Broker, I don’t just help you get started — I walk with you throughout the journey. I help you build your plan, manage your budget, understand your choices, and stay compliant with OPWDD guidelines. Most importantly, I help you create a Self-Direction experience that’s tailored to your goals, your pace, and your independence.

What Is a Support Broker?

A Support Broker is a trained professional who helps individuals and families navigate the Self-Direction process. We act as your guide, coach, planner, and advocate — someone who understands the rules, listens to your needs, and helps you make the most of your services.

We are NOT your Care Manager, Direct Support Staff, or FI. We work for you — providing personalized support to ensure your plan works for your life.

What Does a Support Broker Do?

Here’s a detailed breakdown of our key responsibilities:

1. Develop Your Self-Direction Plan

We help create a clear and personalized plan that outlines:

  • Your life goals (personal growth, independence, community involvement, employment, etc.)

  • What supports or services are needed to meet those goals

  • How Self-Direction will help you live a meaningful life

This is more than just a form — it’s the foundation of your entire program.

2. Build and Maintain Your Budget

Your budget is a powerful tool — and we make sure it works for you.

  • Break down funding across approved categories (staffing, IDGS, classes, memberships, etc.)

  • Make sure the budget reflects your needs and goals

  • Help you request budget changes when life changes

  • Track usage and spending throughout the year

We also support you during budget renewals, ensuring you’re prepared and nothing falls through the cracks.

3. Guide You Through Staffing

We help you build your team:

  • Write job descriptions

  • Guide you through the hiring process

  • Help with onboarding and required forms

  • Review schedules and staffing plans

  • Address staff-related concerns

We ensure your team is aligned with your goals — and supported properly.

4. Collaborate With the Whole Team

We work closely with:

  • Care Managers – to make sure your Self-Direction Plan aligns with your Life Plan

  • FIs – to ensure your budget, reimbursements, and staff documentation meet OPWDD standards

  • Circle of Support – to keep everyone informed and working toward the same goals

You’re not just getting help — you’re getting a coordinated team.

5. Keep You Compliant and Organized

OPWDD has rules — and they matter. We help you:

  • Stay within your approved budget

  • Use funds appropriately

  • Keep receipts, logs, and required documents

  • Submit forms correctly and on time

  • Prepare for audits or renewals

You focus on your goals — we’ll handle the paperwork.

6. Offer Ongoing Coaching and Advocacy

Life changes — and so do your needs. That’s why support doesn’t end once the plan is approved.

We continue to:

  • Answer questions as they come up

  • Help you think through decisions

  • Problem-solve when issues arise

  • Advocate for what matters most to you

A good Support Broker isn’t just present — they’re proactive.

Why Does Having a Support Broker Matter?

Because the process is complex — and you deserve to focus on your life, not just paperwork. A Support Broker helps families:

  • Feel confident instead of overwhelmed

  • Use their budget fully and wisely

  • Create meaningful routines and supports

  • Gain peace of mind knowing they’re not doing it alone

The Self-Direction system offers freedom — a broker helps you use it well.

What Makes a Good Support Broker?

A strong Broker should:

  • Be responsive and communicative

  • Understand Self-Direction inside and out

  • Be organized and deadline-driven

  • Work well with your whole team

  • Respect your voice and choices

And they should meet you where you are — whether that’s explaining the basics or strategizing ways to make your plan work better.

My Approach at Tailored Independence LLC

At Tailored Independence, I believe in:

  • Listening first

  • Personalizing every step

  • Communicating clearly and consistently

  • Staying ahead of deadlines

  • Empowering families to take ownership of the process

Whether you’re new to Self-Direction or have years of experience, I’m here to help you build a plan that truly works for you.

Final Thought

A Support Broker is more than just a professional — they’re a trusted teammate, advocate, and resource. And in a system as empowering (and detailed) as Self-Direction, that kind of support isn’t just helpful — it’s essential.

If you’re looking for a Support Broker who will walk with you, advocate for you, and tailor every part of the journey to your goals, I’d love to connect.
