Launch & Begin Your Self-Direction Services Process

At Tailored Independence LLC, we make sure you are fully prepared to launch your Self-Direction services with confidence. Once your Self-Direction budget is approved, you can begin using your services, hiring staff, and accessing supports that align with your goals.

Steps to Launch Your Self-Direction Services

1. Receive Budget Approval from OPWDD & Fiscal Intermediary (FI)

✅ Once OPWDD approves your Self-Direction budget, your Fiscal Intermediary (FI) activates the funds.
✅ Review your budget summary to ensure all approved services and funds are properly allocated.
✅ Confirm that your Self-Direction plan aligns with your goals and needs.

2. Hire & Onboard Support Staff

✅ If you are hiring self-directed staff, complete the following steps:

  • Work with your FI to finalize payroll setup for employees.

  • Ensure staff complete required OPWDD training and paperwork.

  • Set up a schedule, responsibilities, and expectations for your staff.
    ✅ If using agency-provided services (like Community Habilitation or Respite), coordinate with the provider to start services.

3. Begin Using Your Budget for Goods & Services

✅ Purchase approved items and services, such as:

  • Assistive technology (tablets, communication devices, adaptive tools).

  • Transportation services (Uber/Lyft for eligible trips, MetroCards).

  • Community classes and recreational programs.
    ✅ Keep documentation and receipts for reimbursement through your FI.

4. Set Up Financial & Compliance Tracking

✅ Work with your Support Broker (us!) and FI to track spending.
✅ Ensure proper use of:

  • Self-Hired Staff Timesheets (accurate work logs and payroll processing).

  • Goods & Services Reimbursement Forms.

  • Monthly budget monitoring to stay on track.

5. Participate in Ongoing Support & Adjustments

✅ Your Support Broker will provide ongoing assistance, including:

  • Helping with any budget modifications.

  • Assisting with hiring, training, or replacing staff as needed.

  • Answering any questions about Self-Direction rules and compliance.
    ✅ Work with your Care Manager to ensure your services continue meeting your needs.

6. Annual Budget Renewal & Continued Self-Direction Success

✅ Before the end of the year, review your Self-Direction plan and budget.
✅ Submit any updates or changes to OPWDD for approval.
✅ Continue using Self-Direction to maximize your independence and quality of life.
