As your Support Broker, we guide you through the entire Self-Direction process, ensuring that your services align with your goals, preferences, and budget. The Beauty of Self-Direction is, you can hire and choose any Support Broker that you would like.
Steps in the Support Broker Service Process
1. Initial Consultation & Self-Direction Readiness
✅ Discuss your goals, needs, and preferences for Self-Direction.
✅ Explain how Self-Direction works, including budget flexibility, hiring staff, and choosing services.
✅ Confirm that you have HCBS Waiver approval and are enrolled with a Care Coordination Organization (CCO).
✅ Assist with selecting a Fiscal Intermediary (FI)—the agency that will manage your Self-Direction funds.

2. Developing Your Self-Direction Budget
✅ Work with you and your Care Manager to create a Self-Direction Budget.
✅ Determine how funds will be allocated for:
Staffing (self-hired support staff, Community Habilitation, Respite, etc.)
Goods & Services (assistive technology, gym memberships, transportation, etc.)
Classes & Community Activities
Housing & Rent Subsidies (if applicable)
✅ Ensure the budget aligns with OPWDD guidelines and your personal goals.
3. Circle of Support & Budget Approval
✅ Assist in forming a Circle of Support—a team of people (family, Care Manager, FI, and others) who help support your Self-Direction journey.
✅ Submit your Self-Direction Budget to OPWDD and your FI for approval.
✅ Make necessary revisions and ensure the budget is approved and implemented.
4. Hiring & Managing Support Staff
✅ Guide you through the hiring process for self-hired staff.
✅ Ensure you understand employer responsibilities, including timesheets, training, and managing staff schedules.
✅ Support you in using ACCES-VR, Job Coaches, or Paid Neighbor services if needed.
5. Ongoing Support & Plan Adjustments
✅ Provide regular check-ins to ensure your budget and services continue to meet your needs.
✅ Help revise your budget if your goals or needs change.
✅ Assist with problem-solving, advocacy, and compliance with OPWDD guidelines.
6. Annual Budget Renewal & Compliance
✅ Prepare for your annual budget renewal to ensure continued funding.
✅ Help update your Self-Direction Plan and submit necessary documentation.
✅ Ensure compliance with OPWDD rules while maximizing your services.
